Lest We Forget

 November 11th, 2024

Celebrated on November 11, Remembrance Day is a serious event to respect and remember those who have given their lives in service to their nation.

Picture of the Poppy

Remembrance Day commemorates the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, marking the end of World War I.

Originally centred around the end of that war, Remembrance Day today honours all those who have served and given their lives in past wars.

At this time, we honour the bravery and ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers for introspection, thanksgiving, and a dedication to peace.

"These tips will help you get professional-looking strip lines on OSB wood."

 November 5th, 2024

Lets talk about our title, "These tips will help you get professional-looking strip lines on OSB wood (Oriented Strand Board)."

When we reached the crux of our painting adventure, this became an intriguing project. To make the strips, space them 10 inches apart and make sure they are straight.

The accuracy of the 10" spacing—I was under a quarter of an inch around the entire garage—was just one of the many challenges you faced. It was a success; the laser and ruler allowed me to verify the strips' precise positioning.

I need to have these results.

Here is a short video on how I needed it too Look like

Now let's talk about how we got there.

This alternative approach achieved the desired results; however, it should be noted that OSB wood contains grooves and forms that allow the blue paint to bypass the areas you wish to protect. The result will be an unacceptable, highly horrible line for that stip.

Picture of OSB wood

The initial 48 inches of the wall will be painted blue, followed by a 10-inch strip, and then another 10-inch strip, one in blue, the other in off white with a tint of blue. This is the moment to execute lines that are sharp and crisp, approaching a state of perfection.

This is how it all began

I used Home Hardware's exterior acrylic latex block primer sealer in the first step of the process. I applied the primer to the OSB wood. This crucial step involved using a roller to force the primer into the wood, ensuring maximum coverage and protection for the added colours.

Here is how it all looked when I started.

Before we get there, the ceiling

I had to role the whole ceiling I used an 18" roller, which covered more, along with a brush and a sponge 4" roller to get to tight sports. Once I primed the ceiling I used a Wagner 130 paint sprayer

While this product saves time, it uses one-third more paint than rolling, so keep that in mind when providing a quote.

  • This is the most crucial piece of advice you will ever receive! Use a laser beam for a precise guideline, bearing in mind that the height of the entire garage must be accurate. After that, you apply your tape. I start with a 6" tape. Once you've completed it, you'll require some adhesive.
  • Spread the dapp over the 6" tape and the OSB wood every 8' to further prevent paint from leaking into your strip. Repeat this process until you have taped all the garage walls in this manner. To avoid overlaps when painting the new strip, I re-tape everything using 12-inch tape. When done well, this will yield results that are above average.
How the tapping should look like

Once Your apply the paint, how is should look?
It is a lot of work and a lot of tapping; you need to slow down and take your time; there is no other way to do this.

Results you want to achieve.

However, the results you achieve will surpass average expectations, featuring crisp and sharp finished lines, making the experience extremely rewarding. Based on measurements, the lines appear proportional.

Joseph F. Botelho

Creating the perfect garage for future use as a shop for working on vintage vehicles

 October 23, 2024

Everything went smoothly today; I accomplished a lot, which is always a plus. Just take my time and do an above-average job; there's no way I'll finish by Friday. I'm sealing all the nail holes from the nailer and caulking the seams that don't align perfectly. Using a dry, fast dap.

I started one of the last steps, but there's still a long way to go before I can finish it. My client is pleased with the progress, though, so that's what matters most. Above all else, I proposed caulking as a solution. It essentially provides a more polished look.

Here are a few photos and a video I shot upon arrival to get things started. All necessary tasks are available here. I hope everyone has a fantastic and fruitful day.

This is a 30-second video of my arrival at the job site. This is how the project looked at the beginning of the day.

The top of the garage door needs to have finishing touches on the first coat of paint

Above the garage doors has had the first complete coat of paint.
You can also see the bottom coat of blue on the wall.

That will be the bottom section of the wall with a tinted white 10" in width, followed by a 10" blue strip.
That is not done yet. I used my laser for accuracy with the stipe. Make sure you caulk the top of the green tape. It seals paint from messing with your crisp line.

Tomorrow I will add the top blue 10" strip as the finishing touches to all the walls with this project. More to come.

Joseph

"Check out these awesome benefits when using OSB (Oriented Strand Board)"

 October 22, 2024

I'll be sharing where I'm at tomorrow. It's coming along, but it's not the easiest wood to paint—that OBS stuff. But the perks are totally worth using this product. Look at this list of benefits you should be aware of before embarking on this journey to transform your dream into a reality.
Why OBS Wood is Great for Your Garage Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is a go-to option for building garages because it comes with a bunch of benefits.

Check out these awesome benefits:

  • OSB is usually cheaper than plywood, so it's a wallet-friendly choice for garage walls and roof sheathing.
  • OSB is pretty strong and durable, making it a solid choice for garage use, even though it's more affordable. It can handle the weight of stuff in the garage and won't warp or twist Installing OSB panels is pretty straightforward, making it a breeze to handle and set up, which helps cut back on time and labor costs.
  • You can use OSB for a variety of garage projects, including walls, roof sheathing, and even interior finishes.
  • Going green: Because many OSB products come from sustainable wood sources, they are an environmentally friendly option.
What OSB looks like when installed.

Just a heads up that:

Moisture can damage OSB. While it typically handles moisture better than plywood, prolonged exposure to excessive water can cause it to swell and warp. This is particularly important to consider in garages where the humidity levels can fluctuate significantly.

OSB may require additional finishing touches. The rough look of OSB isn't exactly a showstopper, so it usually gets a coat of paint, some primer, or other finishes to make it look better.

If you're thinking about using OBS in your garage, it’s a beneficial idea to chat with a building pro to make sure it fits your needs and meets local building codes.

Short Video, you may have seen it already?

Joseph

"Probably the hardest ceiling I've ever painted was this one"

October 17, 2024

We would like to share this project with all of our followers. Priming an OBS board is never an effortless task. At my age, the challenge is fulfilling.

This project is intriguing for numerous reasons. One reason it's intriguing is that it's a very difficult painting job, with numerous factors contributing to its intrigue. As you know, the entire 40'x22'x13' is made of OBS (Oriented Strand Board). One, I am rolling all of the primer on the walls and ceilings. Provides an enormous amount of endurance.

My client expresses his desire to add three distinct colours to the walls throughout the entire working area. This will require the use of a laser for precision. We need to outlay each section of the wall colours, so it will require a lot of taping. This is the extent of my progress. Let's go over the details of what needs to be done.

Embarking on a Demanding Painting Project

Is the process of priming a large Oriented Strand Board (OBS) board something you are considering? This intimidating task can be quite difficult, particularly for individuals who have only a limited amount of experience painting. During the course of working on a 40'x22'x13' OBS board priming project, I obtained a number of insights and experiences that I will discuss in this post.

A short video of what we have done so far

The Unique Challenges of OBS Priming

Priming OBS boards presents several distinct challenges.

  • Therefore, it is essential to apply a suitable primer coat, as OBS is a porous material that can absorb paint in a short amount of time.
  • The surface texture of OBS can be quite rough, which can make it challenging to achieve a smooth and even finish for the material.
  • Due to its overall size, priming a large OBS board requires a significant amount of time and effort.

My Approach to the Project

In order to tackle this project, I have chosen to approach it in the following manner:

  • Thorough Preparation: Before applying the primer, I made sure the OBS board was clean, dry, and free of any flaws.
  • Primer Selection: Selecting the appropriate primer is critical for ensuring proper adhesion and durability. I chose a high-quality primer designed specifically for porous surfaces.
  • Rolling Technique: To effectively cover the entire board, I use a high-quality roller and an extending pole.

Adding Colours and Dimension

My client has asked me to paint the walls using a three-colour scheme. To achieve a clean, professional appearance, I will precisely outline the various colour sections using a laser. To accomplish this, careful planning and taping will be required in order to achieve clean lines and a sophisticated finish.

Conclusion

The project of priming a large OBS board is one that is not only difficult but also rewarding. You are able to achieve a finish that is both beautiful and long-lasting if you follow the appropriate procedures and make use of high-quality materials.

Below is a video that shows the stage I am currently at. Have a wonderful weekend.

All the Best,

We are creating a garage using OSB as the material.

October 16, 2024

One often-used and adaptable structural wood panel is an oriented strand board. Designed from rectangularly shaped wood strands arranged in cross-oriented layers and waterproof heat-cured adhesives, OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is an engineered wood panel with many of the strength and performance qualities of plywood.

What OSB (Oriented Strand Board) Looks Like

The amount of money my client is investing in this project does not take into account the amount of thought he is putting into it. This will be an intriguing project. The conversion into a mechanical shop for vintage vehicles necessitates accuracy.

Starting the ceiling

Before the OBS boards were installed, just the framing

You can see the finished garage construction in the following video. This video will showcase the garage's size and the completed framing. Today's installation of the OBS will provide us with a clearer vision of its appearance before we begin painting. This will allow us to make more informed decisions.

Once all the boards are in their respective positions, we will begin painting. The first step is to prime the entire garage using BEAUTITONE PRIMER SOLUTIONS Interior/Exterior Acrylic Latex Block It Primer Sealer. For me to be able to cover all of the walls and ceiling, I will require seven gallons of this primer. I am going to wait twenty-four hours for it to dry before moving on to the next stage of the painting process.

This is the primer I will use for the best primer coverage with OBS

As you can see, the process of completing the OSB boards is currently underway. We have completed the walls, and the construction of the ceiling is nearly complete. Getting the entire garage primed is the next step that we will take. Once we prime everything, we will proceed to a more intricate painting task. To finish the ceiling, we plan to use a flat, white late ceiling paint. There will be three distinct colour combinations on the walls. Once we have measured six feet from the ceiling, we will paint it white eggshell. Next, we will apply a light blue colour to the next four feet, followed by a twelve-inch strip that will span the entire garage. Paint made from eggshell latex will be used to paint the final stage that is located beneath the strip in a dark blue colour once more.

How it looks at the moment: walls are all completed, and part of the ceiling is done

After we have begun the process of painting, I will update this post with additional pictures and additional information regarding how we carry out the process. I will use a laser to create precise lines, and I will use painting tape to achieve smooth and crisp lines. During the process of taping the lines on the bottom, I will add some dap to ensure that no paint goes underneath the tap. This will allow me to achieve a line that is clear and distinct.

If you have any questions or would like to provide us with some feedback, please do not hesitate to do so; we would be delighted to hear your thoughts on this project. If you follow our blog, you will be able to stay up to date on all of the posts that we provide for our audience.
