How to install bi-fold doors for your closet and change the look of your closets.

How to install bi-fold doors for your closet and change the look of your closets.

Installing bi-fold doors is a great way to update your closet and add a space-saving solution. Here's a breakdown of the process:

The finish look

Tools and Materials:
  • New Bi-fold doors (sized for your closet opening)
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Drill (with appropriate drill bits for screws and wall anchors)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Hammer (optional)
  • Saw (Mitre saw or hacksaw for cutting track if needed)
  • Screws (appropriate for mounting track and brackets)
  • Wall anchors (if needed for your wall material)
  • Door hardware (top and bottom pivot pins and brackets) may come pre-installed on your doors
Steps:
Preparation:
  • Remove your existing closet doors and hardware. Patch any holes left behind.
  • Measure your closet opening (width and height). Ensure your new bi-fold doors are slightly smaller in height (around 1/4 inch) to allow for clearance from the floor.
Install the track:
  • Locate the centre point of the top opening of your closet frame. Mark this spot.
  • Position the track with the open side facing down and the bracket end towards the centre mark. Maintain a slight gap (around 3/4 inch) between the track and the front of the opening.
  • Use a level to ensure the track is straight.
  • Pre-drill pilot holes through the track and into the frame (use wall anchors if your wall requires them). Secure the track with screws.
  • If your track is too long, carefully cut it using a saw, ensuring a clean cut.
Install the bottom bracket.
  • Position the bottom bracket on the floor, directly below the centre of the track.
  • Drill pilot holes, secure the bracket to the floor, and jamb with screws.
  • Install the doors:
  • Attach the top and bottom pivot pins to the designated holes on the doors (usually pre-drilled).
  • Starting with one door, lift it and insert the top pivot pin into the track bracket.
  • For the bottom, slide the door into the bottom bracket, ensuring it hangs plumb (straight up and down).
  • You may need to adjust the bottom pivot for height and plumb.
  • Repeat for the second door, ensuring proper alignment when folded together.
  • Finishing Touches:
  • Some bi-fold doors may come with additional hardware, like door stops or magnetic catches. Install them as per the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Check the smooth operation of the doors by folding and unfolding them. Make any minor adjustments as needed.

Changing the Look of Your Closets:
  • Bi-fold doors themselves come in various styles and materials (mirrored, wood, vinyl, etc.) to enhance your closet's look. Here are some additional ideas:
  • Paint the doors.
  • Spruce up plain doors with a fresh coat of paint that complements your room's decor.
  • Add decorative hardware.
  • Replace standard knobs with more decorative pulls or handles.
  • Install closet organizers.
  • Maximize space with shelving, hanging rods, and drawer units behind the bi-fold doors.
Upgrade the interior lighting.

  • Add LED strip lights for better visibility inside your closet.
  • With any luck, this will provide you with all the knowledge you need to install bi-fold doors correctly. Please let me know if you have any more comments or questions about this subject.

How to replace rotten wood on your outside deck like a pro.

Tools and Materials:

  • Pry bar
  • Circular saw or reciprocating saw
  • Hammer
  • Drill (with appropriate drill bits for wood and fasteners)
  • New deck boards (same size and type of wood as your existing deck, if possible)
  • Screws (galvanized or stainless steel for exterior use)
  • Wood chisel (optional)
  • Sander (optional)

Steps to Follow:

Assess the damage:

Start by identifying the rotten boards. Prod the wood with a screwdriver. If it crumbles easily, it needs a replacement.
Determine the extent of the rot. You might need to replace more than one board, depending on how far the rot has spread.

The piece you want to replace

Remove the rotten boards.

Safety Alert: Make sure the rotten board is well-supported before removing it to avoid personal injury or damage to the surrounding deck structure.

Use the pry bar to carefully pry up the rotten board. If possible, start at the ends where the board meets the joists (support beams underneath).

If the board is stuck, use the reciprocating saw or circular saw to cut through the rotten section, making it easier to pry out.

Once the board is loose, remove any nails or screws holding it in place.

Prepare the installation site:

Inspect the joists (beams) underneath the rotten board. If they're rotten as well, they'll need to be replaced too. This is a more complex repair and might be best left to a professional.
If the joists are sound, use a wood chisel (optional) to remove any remaining rotten wood debris from the installation area.
Optional: You can use a sander to smoothen the area where the new board will sit.

Install the new deck board:

Measure the opening to ensure the new board will fit properly. Cut the new deck board to size if necessary.

Pre-drill holes: Drill pilot holes through the new deck board to prevent splitting when screwing it into the joists.

Fasten the board: Secure the new deck board to the joists using galvanized or stainless steel screws.

Boards have been replaced

Finishing Touches:

Once the board is secure, sand any rough edges and countersink the screws (drive them slightly below the wood surface). This will allow for a smooth finish when applying a stain or sealant.

Apply a coat of exterior-grade deck stain or sealant to protect the new wood and match the existing deck (optional).

All the Best,

Joseph Botelho

Choose the right drywall thickness for your project by learning about the various thicknesses. Understand the various jointing compounds and finishing methods used on drywall joints.

Materials:Buy enough drywall panels to cover your walls and ceiling, plus an additional quantity in case you make any cutting errors. Sheets are available in standard sizes of 4' x 8' and in different thicknesses.

Jointing Compounds:
To fill, tape, and finish drywall seams, you'll need various thicknesses of joint compound, also known as mud.

Fasteners:
The most widely used fasteners are drywall screws. Considering the thickness of your drywall, select the right screw length.

Framing Supplies:
To create a flat surface on which to attach drywall, you may need additional framing materials, such as furring strips, depending on the structure of your wall.

Tools:

Safety Gear:
Dust mask, safety glasses, gloves

Cutting Tools:
Utility knife, drywall saw (or rotary tool) for making precise cuts.

Lifting Tools:
A drywall lift can be helpful, especially for working on ceilings.

Screwing Tools:
Power drill with a drywall screw attachment or a manual drywall screw gun.

Taping Tools:
Putty knife in various sizes are used for applying joint compound and smoothing drywall seams.

Sanding Tools:
Sandpaper in various grits (coarse, medium, fine) for sanding drywall mud after it dries.

Measuring Tools:
Tape measure, level

Additional Tips:
Protect the area:
Cover the floor and furniture with drop cloths to minimize dust and paint splatter.

Enlist a helper:
Having an extra pair of hands can be a big advantage, especially when lifting and holding drywall panels.
